X-Rays and other types of imaging provide valuable information for both you and your doctor. A visual record of your spine can confirm other exam findings and make your Chiropractic care more precise. X-Rays are a form of energy related to radio waves and sunshine. The image cast onto special film reveals internal structures of the body. These pictures can reveal fractures, bone diseases and joint degeneration. They can also later serve as documentation of your spinal rehabilitation.
Chiropractors go through 4 years of post-graduate training to detect and remove these subluxations. This is done through a method called an adjustment . The word adjustment describes hundreds of ways of using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore spinal bones to a more normal position or motion. When spinal function is improved, nervous system function (health) can improve too. Only after these years of training do Chiropractic doctors become experts at using just the right amount of force in the right direction. Adjustments help return the bones to a more normal position, relieving the pressure on the nerves and in turn relieving pain and disease. Chiropractic is truly at art.
At Total Health & Wellness Center, we take full spine x-rays. This allows us to see your entire spinal column in one picture. It also allows us to show you any abnormal curvature of the spine that may or may not be contributing to your symptoms. We can also measure your hip and shoulder heights and let you know if there is an imbalance that could also be contributing and/or aggravating your condition.
Special care is taken to reduce X-Ray exposure. This is done by using ultra-sensitive films and shielding sensitive body parts. It is beneficial to your care and treatment to have an exact visual record of your spine in a weight-bearing position. These pictures are shown to you at your personalized report of findings and written reports of these films can be provided to other health care providers.

Flexion/distraction therapy is a chiropractic technique that provides flexion and traction to specific areas of the spine. This aids in the re-creation of lost movement as well as the decompression and re-alignment of the spine.
The patient lies face down on the special flexion/distraction table at a specific angle in order to appropriately treat the spinal dysfunctions. The 5-7 minute period of repetitive movements tends to accelerate the rate of healing by increasing blood flow and thus inducing increased spinal range of motion.
This technique has been used with great success for the treatment of disc injuries, scoliosis and various other low back complaints.

This is a form of electrical current that is administered at the site of the injury and/or pain, especially muscles, for the blocking of pain. Small amounts of this electrical current are induced into the tissues for the purpose of reducing swelling. This widely used technique safely strengthens muscles while helping to reduce painful symptoms.
Patients generally feel a slight tingling sensation at first. Since your body may become accustomed to the initial setting, the intensity may be increased during the course of your 7-10 minute treatment. This will maximize the healing effect.

This is a therapeutic treatment using high frequency sound waves administered in the region of soft tissue injuries.
Ultrasound works by using sound vibrations as fast as a million times per second. These vibrations penetrate the tissues deep in the body, creating a heat response. This then helps to break down and disperse unhealthy calcium and other hard tissue accumulations. The rise in temperature also increases blood flow, relaxes muscle spasms, massages damaged tissues and speeds the overall healing process.

Gel is used to conduct the sound waves, and is kept at room temperature. This gel may feel cool at first, but then warms to skin temperature. Most patients feel nothing, or a pleasant and relaxing sensation below the surface of the skin

This is a way of inducing passive motion into the spine for the purpose of stretching spinal joints and increasing mobility. The patient lies face up on a bench table which has roller-type cams beneath its surface. These rollers can slowly travel the length of the spine, stretching spinal joints. Most patients find this form of therapy to be relaxing and very helpful.
The gentle rolling action is restful and exercises the spine without effort.
Intersegmental traction is used to help increase and restore necessary elasticity and motion to the spine. Since discs have poor blood supply, they get nutrients from the circulation of fluids surrounding spinal joints. Fixations prevent this natural circulation and can cause disc thinning and degeneration.

This is a form of therapy used to raise the temperature of soft tissues directly below the surface of the skin. This can be done with how packs, warm moist towels, heating pads, water bottles or infrared lamps. Heat applied to the surface of the skin enlarges blood vessels below the surface, relaxing tissues and can temporarily relieve painful symptoms.

Increasing circulation and relaxing muscles is helpful before and after chiropractic adjustment, exercises and other treatments.

Heat is usually recommended for the relaxation of tissues in spasm and for the temporary relief of symptoms associated with chronic pain and muscle tightness. Using heat to calm tissues suffering from long term spasm or irritation is an easy way to increase flexibility, range of motion, increase circulation and speed the overall healing process.

This is the term that describes the application of ice, cold towels, ice massage and cold compresses to reduce the temperature of tissues directly on or below the surface of the skin. Surface cooling constricts blood vessels, numbs painful areas, and helps relax muscle spasms.

Cold temperatures reduce nerve transmissions of painful symptoms and provide temporary relief.

Ice is most often used to manage acute injuries or recent eruptions of chronic conditions. Cooling affected tissues is effective in reducing and preventing post-traumatic swelling. Local cooling should be applied several times a day during the initial stages of an injury.
